Custom & Stock Boat Name Boards, Switch Panels, Labels, Signs

Custom And Stock Designs At Reasonable Prices

Custom Name Boards Stock Name Boards Registration/Documentation Boards Electrical & Instrument Panels Custom Signs

This part of our business has just kind of taken off on its own since we got our CNC router a while back.

You know how it goes: Someone comes along and says she wants nice boat lettering engraved on name boards for her boat -- but she doesn't ever want to worry about paint or varnish or any other kind of "sign maintenance." And by the way, could we match this really interesting type font?

Or a guy just documented his boat and wants his numbers engraved into a nice big chunk of teak he can mount below-decks.

Someone else is renovating his 1971 center console sport fisher and can't live without an instrument panel that looks as cool as the rest of his refurbished pride and joy.

"We ordered [name boards for Dual Dreams] and they exceeded our expectations. Pictures don't do them justice, and I dare say the they will last longer than the boat!"

Mike & Harriet Lewis -- Green Cove Springs, Florida

Or he needs a custom switch panel. Or she wants to be absolutely sure no one forgets where the life raft is stowed. And so on and so forth.

For the most part, boat name lettering, switch panels and such are custom projects.

Except for our ready-made "emergency" signs, the material for your own signs or panels, the type style and the layout of labels, instrument cut-outs, switch placements -- all that stuff -- is all your choice.

If you're looking for no-maintenance sign-type stuff, your best choice most likely will be King Starboard's Color Core, which is a high-tech marine plastic with contrasting colors like those shown here. The colors will not fade, and the material is basically impervious to all kinds of weather.

A quarter-inch thick Color Core panel with a black-white-black sandwich scheme will work just fine as a replacement for most instrument or dashboard panels, and can serve as the face material for some switch panels as well. In either case, we can engrave identifying labels right into the panel, adjacent to  instruments, switches or whatever.

We primarily make switch panels out of engraving stock, which is a hard plastic black-white-black sandwich that's about 1/8" thick. This is the stuff you find on most production boats, as this example shows. And as you see here, if you give us the dimensions of your switch components, LED lights, fastener points and whatever, we'll produce a panel with precise tolerances that let you snap everything into place -- no muss, no fuss.

And of course, we have a nice selection of teak lumber in varying lengths, widths and thicknesses that will let you create eye-catching, totally traditional name boards and the like.

Just tell us what you need.

Send us an e-mail describing your requirement. If you're replacing an existing component, a digital picture of the old one would help. If you're looking for a whole new thing, try attaching a simple drawing that shows the key dimensions. And tell us what kind of material you'd like to use.

Or heck, just pick up the phone and call us -- 305-743-4090 -- and tell us what you're after. Then we'll follow-up with a price quote.

We made this custom name board using King Starboard's Color Core material. It's a "sandwich" of white Starboard in the center and a deep blue on front and back sides. And unlike vinyl boat lettering, it'll last just about forever. More info.

Of course we also make custom name boards using teak. The customer for this set of boards wanted his boat lettering for "River Dancer" engraved in an unusual font. He gave us the font's name; we got our hands on it, and here's the result. More info.

Custom Boat Name Boards
Your Choice Of King Starboard Color Core Or Solid Teak

Custom King Starboard Color Core

Name Boards

We have blue-white-blue, tan-green-tan, red-white-red and black-white-black in stock now. Other colors may be special-ordered at additional cost.

E-mail your boat lettering requirements to us or call for a price quote, 305-743-4090

Characteristics & Costs

Color Core is basically impervious to the marine environment -- so your boat lettering won't fade, crack, rot or delaminate when exposed to sun, salt, rain and so on.

The base Color Core material goes for $11.50 per square foot for 1/4" thick, and $19.50 for 1/2" thick. Sold in square-foot increments only.

CNC design set-up and run-time costs will depend on the complexity of your requirements. Our minimum charge for this is $75.00

The largest pair of custom Color Core name boards we've made to date -- each nearly six feet long -- now grace the topsides of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Block Island.

Solid Teak Custom Name Boards

...we have returned from patrol...and found your boards waiting for us on the pier in Hawaii.  They look great and we are very happy with the way they have turned out.  My captain was extremely pleased.  ... I'll be sure to recommend your business in the future.

Joe Restle, BMC

USCGC RUSH (WHEC 723) - Honolulu

Characteristics & Costs

Teak is very durable and highly rot-resistant. If you varnish it and stick it outdoors, as with name boards, you're in for a good bit of periodic maintenance. But hey, it's a boat, right?

The material cost for teak name boards will depend on the dimensions you specify.

CNC set-up and run-time costs will depend on the complexity of your boat lettering requirements. Our minimum charge for this is $75.00

Please Note: We do not varnish, apply gold leaf or provide other "finish work" for the name boards we produce.

E-mail your requirements to us or call for a price quote, 305-743-4090.

uscgcSeahawk-1We produced these name boards for the U.S.C.G. Cutter Seahawk -- 9-1/2" tall x 73" long. The Seahawk is one of 10 U.S. Coast Guard vessels we've now equipped with new name boards, and that makes us feel good.

Stock Name Boards -- All Solid Teak
Boat Lettering

These boards are solid FEQ teak, measuring 4" high x 23-1/4" long, and 1/2" thick. Letter height is 2-1/2", and the artwork is about 3" tall. Your boat's name will be precisely engraved on our CNC machine -- plus you can choose any of the three engraved-art designs shown below at no additional cost.
Buy a pair for mounting on your vessel and get a discount.
Or get just one name board as a gift for someone special -- or to display in your den or main saloon.
Either way, your teak name boards will deliver years of pleasure at an affordable price --and they're a much
classier boat-lettering choice than vinyl lettering.
Base prices shown below are for boat names that have up to 8 letters and/or spaces, and include the artwork of your choice. You can add more characters/spaces for $10 each -- and your name boards will be longer as well, in proportion to the length of the vessel's name. We can also produce your name boards using 1" thick (nominal) teak at an additional cost; email or call us for pricing.

Electrical & Instrument Panels

Custom Switch Panels & Instrument Panels

These can be as complex or as simple as you like. The panel shown here includes an enclosure that incorporates a stainless steel piano hinge -- so the whole thing is instantly accessible for inspection, changes or repairs.

E-mail your own requirements to us or call for a price quote, 305-743-4090.

Characteristics & Costs

If we're engraving label information into your panel, it will most likely incorporate either 1/4" thick King Starboard black-white-black Color Core or 1/8" thick engraving stock.

We sell Color Core in square-foot increments only, at $11.50 per square foot for 1/4" stock. We sell black-white-black engraving stock for 25 cents per square inch, which amounts to $36.00 per square foot.

In reality, the bulk of your costs for custom panels will be for CNC design set-up and run-time. These costs will depend on the complexity of your specific requirements. Our minimum charge for CNC work is $75.00

Smaller panels like this one are almost always made with engraving stock.

General Purpose Custom Signs & Graphics

King Starboard Color Core

We have blue-white-blue, tan-green-tan, red-white-red and black-white-black in stock now. Other colors may be special-ordered at additional cost.

General Purpose Signs

Okay, so this isn't really what Buck Woodcraft is mostly about. But we do have the capability, and we do produce a fair amount of this kind of "signage" here in Marathon for local graphics shops. And, too, for the occasional walk-in customer. Not to mention for ourselves, as testified by the multi-part sign over there on the left that hangs right outside our shop.

So if you're in the market for general purpose signs and/or graphic treatments that call for King Starboard's Color Core material, by all means I hope you'll tell us what you need and give us a chance at your business.

Just E-mail your requirements to us or call for a price quote, 305-743-4090.

How To Make Your Boat's Name Stand Out In Color
nmbrd-apply-epoxy1. You could just apply paint to your boat's lettering, but I think color-tinted epoxy delivers a more durable result. Once you have the color intensity you want, simply brush the tinted epoxy onto your lettering. Apply 2 or 3 thin coats, 24 hours or more apart for each coat. Don't worry about getting epoxy where you don't want it -- it'll come off later. Coloring agents for epoxy resin are available from several online sources.

nmbrdvarnish-sander-1
2. Once you have your letters colored in the way you want them and you've let the epoxy cure for a couple of days, use a random orbital sander to strip away any excess epoxy/coloring. Use #100 or #120 grit paper to start, then finish with #250 or #320 grit for a ready-to-varnish surface.

nmbrdvarnish-1stcoatsikkens
3. Now lay down your first coat of varnish, nice and thin to avoid having it build up in your engraved letters. As to the sort of varnish you choose, bear in mind that if your boards are going to live outdoors, they'll need the best UV protection you can give them -- and that's true also for the epoxy-based lettering. Around here we like a product called Sikkens.
nmbrd-sandbetweencoats-14. Let your varnish dry at least 24 hours between coats, and (I know, you already know this) don't apply varnish in direct sunlight or when it's going to rain any time soon. Lightly scuff the cured varnish between each coat with #400 wet/dry sandpaper. All told, you'll want at least four coats, and 6 or 8 would be better. bonhomiegloss-2
5.
Enjoy. If you're buying a single board as a gift or for displaying anywhere indoors, then you'll never have to worry about replenishing the board's finish over time. If you're installing a pair of boards on your vessel, it'd be a good idea to put a bit of space between the rear of the boards and your mounting surfaces, using nylon washers as shims or whatnot. This will keep varnish-damaging moisture from building up behind the board.
