It seems boaters can always find good uses for acrylic (which, by the way, is the generic term for the the well-known brand name "Plexiglass), and that's why Buck Woodcraft keeps a decent variety in stock -- including solid white and black, tinted grey and bronze, as well as clear.

The acrylic we offer is cast, not extruded. That's because the cast form of acrylic is much superior in terms of its workability and longevity in a marine environment.

Cast acrylic has excellent environmental stability compared to other plastics such as polycarbonate (meaning it won't turn yellow and otherwise get all gnarly), and it's usually the material of choice for boat portlights, hatch inserts and the like.

Although the stuff isn't as impact-resistant as polycarbonate, it's about 10 times stronger than the equivalent thickness of glass with only half the weight. And cast acrylic is easy to cut and drill, and glues up just fine with the appropriate adhesive.

How tough is cast acrylic? Well, after its discovery in the 1930s, acrylic was used during World War II for submarine periscopes, and for military airplane windshields, canopies and gun turrets. And the windows you gaze out of when flying along in a jetliner? Yep, cast acrylic.
