Custom Woodworking & Fabrication Services

When Buck Woodcraft was born here in Marathon, our custom woodworking services were

pretty much the core of the business, along with sales of marine lumber, plywood and the like. And they still are, because every boat--and every boat owner--is unique, with highly individual needs that   don't lend themselves easily to off-the-shelf solutions.

The only real difference today is that a lot of our custom work is done not just with wood, but with King Starboard marine polymers as well (for a description of that wonderful material's uses and advantages, click here).router2.jpg (5512 bytes)

Marine lumber and Starboard share a fair number of  basic milling and fabrication requirements, and Buck Woodcraft is fully set up to handle both types of material. Our equipment includes commercial-grade table, panel and band saws, and the usual planing, shaping and routing tools, plus no end of specialized production tools. We use WEST System epoxy, Tite-Bond II waterproof glue and a vacuum bagging and clamping system in fabricating traditional marine wood components. And we employ a hot-air plastic welding system when building components with King Starboard, polycarbonates and other plastics.

"I received the handrails you made for me and they are great. Tell whoever ran the equipment that fine craftsmanship is hard to come by these days.

"I'm putting your name on our C&C Yachts web site for handrails etc."

Darrell Teague Austin, Texas

What do custom woodworking services cost? Buck Woodcraft's basic rate is $80 per hour, with a $25 minimum shop-time fee. bowsprit_onboat4_small.jpg (7621 bytes)Also, we now have a very nifty CNC Router that allows precision cutting of complex designs in wood, King Starboard and other materials. The minimum set-up and run-time cost for that puppy is $75.

As with any custom services work, the best way to hold your costs to a minimum is to carefully think your requirements through before the project gets underway--and we'll provide whatever advice and guidance we can to help make sure your project starts off on the right track and stays there.

Since 1995, Buck Woodcraft has produced hundreds of custom projects. About 80% of our work is marine related, but we also build, re-build and restore architectural items, furniture, cabinets, enclosures and the like for land-based customers as well.

Here's a representative list of the kinds of projects we have produced (for a selection of project photos, click here):

  • Marine cabinets and lockers

"Just wanted to let you know that the [companionway] screen and frame arrived safely today. They are absolutely beautiful...

"[A] local woodworking person I brought the screen to was very impressed with your workmanship. The screen really is a work of art!"

    B.V. Zummeren Highland Park, Illinois

  • Instrument boxes and enclosures
  • Custom Shower & Cockpit Grates
  • Galley cabinets, cutting boards
  • Bulkhead tables
  • Bookcases
  • Bowsprits
  • Hand rails
  • Tillers
  • Eyebrows and other trim molding
  • Hatch boards
  • Companionway boards & screens

Regarding a custom King Starboard storage container for his propane tanks:

"Everything fits as planned and it looks very good.  It
is as strong as anything on my boat and I like the nonskid top."

"...Worth the money - and even the shipping cost!"

    Tim Robison Boston, Massachusetts

  • Cockpit coamings
  • Swim platforms

Please call 305.743.4090 or e-mail me--buckwood@buckwoodcraft.com--if you have any questions or need additional information about our custom woodworking services.
